Superfood is word that some people use to describe food that is exceptionally nutritious or beneficial to your health. A superfood might contain a large amount of a mineral or nutrient that you might need, it might contain a plant chemical that acts as a drug or medicine in your body (phytochemicals), or it might contain antioxidants which help prevent damage to your cells. It turned out that many things on my diet were already considered superfoods, so I just had to find some I wasn't incorporating. There is a lot of research done on different foods with real scientific evidence to back up claims. Also, there is a lot of bogus, suspect, misinformed, and deceitful claims. I only added food that had some factual research behind it. Food is an absolutely passionate subject, and people are passionate about it. I know this from both sides of the fence, because I was a vegetarian for 7 years (part of what made me gain weight to begin with), and had to listen to people berate my eating choices or ask dumb questions (or get all biblical about it), and because the only person more judgmental than most vegetarians is a vegan. Looking up food information always leads to me looking on people's comments, and there are usually vegetarians and vegans being both judgmental, and consequentially picked on. More on this point later... However, I just want to point out that people are very emotional and even irrational about food. You have to be very judicious when doing research on it.
What did I add to my diet? I added dry roasted sunflower seeds, which have lots of good fats in them, plus Selenium, a cancer fighter, frozen blueberries, which contain a lot of antioxidants, flaxseed (ground, added to yogurt), which contain omega-3's and cancer preventing ligan, and kiwi, a nutritional and antioxidant jewel. I added extra virgin olive oil(2 tsp) to balance my fats and for antioxidants. Also I added some spices to my routine. I added cayenne pepper (or any other hot pepper flakes), which is anti-inflammatory and fights against arthritis and headaches. I added curry powder, which is an anti-inflammatory cancer fighter that helps prevent Alzheimer's. I added an adult gummy vitamin (half dose), to be on the safe side. I added green tea (sweetened w/ honey), to boost my metabolism and to provide anti-aging antioxidants. I added cocoa powder, which is chocked (excuse the pun) full of antioxidants. I first tried mixing it in with the yogurt (blech! probably due to non-dissolving) I now microwave some 1% milf and stir about 1 1/2 tbsp in the milk. I love it. I look forward to it before bed time every night. I do not sweeten it, I just drink it up. Surprisingly, I find it more delightful unsweetened. I also added a clove of garlic (sorry, wonderful spouse of mine, I know garlic breath sucks), which contains allicin, a compound that is produced when garlic is crushed. Allicin is a powerful antioxidant, helps control and lower cholesterol, and helps lower blood pressure. I can attest to the blood pressure effect, I have seen a statistically significant decrease in my blood pressure numbers because of the garlic. In order to get the most allicin out of the garlic, I grind the garlic into liquid with my molars. It stings a little, but is pleasant enough for me. I usually pair it with the salmon I eat for lunch, as it flavors the meal and goes well with it. Plus I get all the stinky food in one sitting! I also added cinnamon to my diet. Although the jury is still out, cinnamon has been found to have positive benefits on cholesterol, blood sugar, LDL, and triglyceride levels. I go crazy with it on an orange. This is an absolutely amazing taste pairing, by the way. Try it, you will find that it has a "Gestalt effect" on the palate, which simply is to say that the sum of these two flavors is greater than they add up to individually. This is also the case with chocolate and spicy hot food, and peanut butter and bacon.
I also started taking acetyl-L-carnitine with alpha lipoic acid. Acetyl-L-carnitine has been found to increase fatty acid oxidation and boost general metabolic activity. This is good except it increased oxidative damage. It was then found that this oxidative process can be held in check with alpha lipoic acid. This basically means that it slows down the aging process. You can read more on this subject here: acetyl-L-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid.
BTW, I also substitute pink salmon for the sardines in my diet. Not only does this work out to be about half the price, it is probably more environmentally friendly. My diet has also been beneficial in this area. I am now much more environmentally friendly with this diet. Number one, there is no edible waste. I never throw anything away because it is wasted. All vegetable waste produced is composted (more on that later). I have a few plastic bags that the frozen vegetables come in (which I try to recycle with the plastic shopping bags), and I have the can that the fish comes in, which I recycle. Also, the lack of much red meat in my diet is great as far as greenhouse gases are concerned. If everyone would move this direction, we would be making some dents, but alas...
Another benefit is cost. I am eating healthy for cheaper than I was eating bad. This is usually the preventive factor in healthy eating. It has been estimated that in order to eat healthy, it would cost you around 20 dollars a day, whereas eating unhealthy can be done at around $3.20/day. I am eating healthy for about 5 to 6 dollars a day. It can be done! I have lost about 6 pounds since last blogging, and am about 24.5 on the BMI scale. Progress is slowing because I am near my ideal weight. That is not a bad thing; you want to ease into your parking space, not race into to it. That way you don't hit anything (like a wall).
I am happy to report that I have been running 3 times a week faithfully since near the time I stared all this. I have been running a 5k everytime for 3 weeks now, and am now up to 3.25 mi as of yesterday. I also passed the army standard for my age in the 2 mile run two weeks ago for the first time(since the army), and I beat the standard consistently for the past 3 runs. Running has normally been hard on me since I have gotten older. I have a knee that I folded up under me when I slipped on the wet grass playing flag football in college. This has bothered me when I run on it for any length of time. It swells up and is sore and gets all puffy and fluidy. No worries. I use Vibram five-fingers to run in. Shoes. These are shoes that have been designed to mimic the natural motions of our feet. The human body has definitely evolved for running. Although that is not the only specialized area that humans have, it absolutely played a role in our development. Although we are weak, and can not out run hardly any animal to escape being eaten, there is not a single animal on earth that we can not run down to eat. The human form is the model of conserving energy while running. We dissipate heat in such a way that allows us to keep running. Walking upright is actually less efficient for us than other animals, but running is different. We were built for running. We were built to chase animals down across open plains. This is obvious in both form and function. (This is why humans were never meant to be vegans, no one was chasing plants across the plains) However, we were not built for shoes. Running in shoes makes you run in such a way that is damaging and hard on your joints. Running barefooted keeps you from running this way. You avoid the shock to your knees and hips. Shoes just teach you to run the wrong way. Vibrams allow me to run naturally without all the swelling. I suggest this method for anyone, especially if you have injury issues. A word of caution if you run out and buy some Vibrams. You must try them on to ensure proper fit. You must get used to them, as you will use different muscles to walk and run in them. It is a slow build up of getting your body used to them. I believe they were worth every penny I paid for them, and every muscle ache and soreness that i had to endure.
Stay tuned to my blog for more progress reports, tips, and science. I will be discussing winemaking, gardening, and how to make your own yogurt cheaply and deliciously soon. Thanks for reading, and be nice out there:)
